Matt joined Capital Cranfield in 2023. His nine defined benefit appointments cover approximately £6bn of assets and more than 22,000 members, with schemes ranging from £3m to £5bn.
He acts as Chair, co-trustee and representative of the sole corporate trustee, chairs an investment subcommittee and acts as alternate OCIO. His appointments span public sector, higher education and corporate schemes.
His trustee experience spans funding, investment, covenant and governance in complex circumstances. He has overseen open schemes balancing future accrual with past-service security, evaluated risk-transfer options, managed schemes through covenant pressure and benefit rectification, led governance restructures, repaired sponsor relationships and resolved trustee deadlock.
Before becoming a professional trustee, Matt was Chief Stakeholder Officer at LGPS Central, the £30bn FCA-regulated investment manager owned by its local-authority partner funds. He previously spent 16 years at Mercer, leading its 60-strong Midlands pensions team and acting as Scheme Actuary to nine defined benefit schemes covering more than 80,000 members and £10bn of assets.
Matt’s style is thoughtful, pragmatic and collaborative. He listens carefully, focuses discussion on the issues that matter and provides constructive challenge without dominating the debate.
Matt is an Accredited Member of the Association of Professional Pension Trustees. He qualified as an actuary, was formerly a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and holds a BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Leeds. Away from work, he is a lifelong sufferer of Middlesbrough Football Club and spends much of his spare time watching his children play football.
