Matt is a senior pensions professional with over 20 years of success in managing scheme funding and investments. With experience as an actuary, advisor, and executive in an asset management firm, he brings expertise that spans the industry.

Matt has served as a trusted Scheme Actuary for a number of prominent DB schemes, overseeing 80,000 members’ benefits and £10bn of assets, and also provided valuable advice to employers and Trustees of workplace DC pension schemes. In his most recent role as Chief Stakeholder Officer at a £30bn FCA-regulated asset management firm, he managed complex relationships across shareholders, clients and the marketplace, enabling better strategic decision-making across investments.

Matt has collaborated with trustees and employers across diverse sectors, from overseas multinationals and FTSE 100/250 companies to higher education institutions and privately owned enterprises. His proven ability to build and enhance relationships between employers and trustees has resulted in the resolution of deadlocked situations and facilitated improved outcomes for scheme members. He brings a collaborative culture to the teams he works with, ensuring that everyone is encouraged to bring their whole self to the task at hand and creating the conditions for excellent decision-making.

With a strong track record of achieving favourable outcomes in complex scenarios, Matt’s expertise encompasses various aspects of pension management, including integrating funding, covenant, and investments, negotiation, governance, and strategic planning. He led the UK’s first buyouts incorporating GMP equalisation (post-Lloyds) with Rothesay Life and L&G in 2020/21, introducing the first true risk-sharing scheme to the higher education sector, and provided insight to the government on the Mansion House reforms.

A Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, Matt’s dedication extends beyond the professional realm. Away from work, he is a lifelong sufferer of Middlesbrough Football Club and can be found travelling the country supporting both his daughter and son playing for their grassroots football teams.
